South Coast

The south coast of Oregon is the most spectacular, it rivals Big Sur. Alas, we had to face fog for some of it, as is common.

Before the craggy part it also includes the Oregon Dunes, which are of course as different as you can get from the jagged rocks further south.

As we drove by Bandon, we noticed they were having their annual Cranberry Festival. Yum. Then we went in and what did we find? Well, not a single cranberry product in the stalls. Not one. We did eventually find (after a hunt) some cranberry jams and breads in the regular stores. We asked why they had no cranberry products.

We did eventually find (after a hunt) some cranberry jams and breads in the regular stores. We asked why they had no cranberry products. "Hey, that would be a good idea!" one of the clerks said, and it seemed she was in earnest. Eventually we learned the harvest is in October, but there are no tourists then.

Obligatory drive-by lighthouse photographing. Amazingly, as pretty as these look, you can get less excited by the 10th one. This is Umpqua lighthouse.

Near the north end of Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. At first, forget your Lawrence of Arabia preconceptions. They planted grasses in the dunes to keep them put. The southern end looks more like trackless desert, and that's where we camped.

That doesn't mean the dunes aren't pretty, though.
