The road down the Oregon coast starts at the pretty town of Astoria.
While the Victorian homes they advertise weren't very exciting, the town
does have a tower, the Astoria Column, which gets you some 700 feet above
the water (fortunately you drive most of it).
We had planned to try to get to Mount St. Helen's, but it was rainy and
foggy there so Astoria was the destination.
South of Astoria we stopped at a beach where a sandcastle contest was
going on. This was just a minor one, the big one is earlier, but they need
to practice, after all.
