Before reaching the town of Newport we stopped for a picnic at Agate
Beach, which didn't have very many agates. One good thing about RV camping
is that you're always ready for a picnic any time you see a pleasant
spot.
It did have a high school
track competition going on, which I photographed. Further on was a spot
where whales were cavorting, and the Cape Perpetua scenic area and
Devil's Churn.

The end of Devil's Churn, a narrow cove that channels waves into a small space. The swells were not that high when we came, but it still was pretty good. Must be something in a storm.

At the track meet, 5 girls run into the water to cool off. Made for a great shot.

Pollution has created a thick foam on the water where the waves break. An ugly beige, it reminds you of how much we're polluting the world.

A team of racing high school athletes in a track meet on Agate beach made for a nice "chariots of fire" shot.

At the beach was a high school track meet. Here the kids run down the beach into the mist.

A whale pair was cavorting near the coast. Here one shows his back. You need a long lens for whale photography. This was my 200mm.

The lighthouse overlooking Agate beach, where we stopped for a picnic. In spite of the name, not many agates on the beach.

More shots of waves crashing. This wasn't a day of high surf, either.

Our whale dives below the surface, leaving only the tail sticking out of the water.
