Selected Burning Man Panoramas

Selected Burning Man Panoramas

I have been shooting Panoramas of Burning Man since 1998. Here is a selection of a variety of different types. Each year the favourite is still usually the giant one of all Black Rock City, shot from some tower near the center. However, all 11 of those are not included here, to instead present more variety. Go to the appropriate page for each year (there's an index at the top of each page) to peruse each city in detail. You can also check out my page of best selected panoramas from around the world. Donors to BRAF may purchase large prints of these photos. I keep several on my walls, and an 20 foot long one wrapped around my staircase. Every time I go up the stairs I imagine myself in Black Rock City.

These are in reverse chronological order. My favourite though, is still the large panorama of 2002.

2011

The conclave performs before the burn, 360 view from edge of circle.

2009

The man burning, viewed from the Esplanade

from-temple.jpg (11540 x 1100 - 1672K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 58195 x 5547 (323 Megapix). (13' 7" x 16" [$163] at 357PPI)

The playa from the Temple

2008

bright-temple.jpg (17343 x 1100 - 1615K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 59564 x 3778 (225 Megapix). (20' 4" x 16" [$224] at 243PPI)

This is a 360 degree shot while the Temple is burning in 2008. It shows the city in a circle around the temple, and since I'm somewhat deep in the crowd, you also see the crowd behind me and their faces as they watch the burn. Some are crying, some are slack-jawed. You can also see that it's the coldest night we had on the playa.

morn-200.jpg (19000 x 795 - 1839K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 91922 x 3847 (354 Megapix). (30' 10" x 16" [$319] at 248PPI)

Sunrise after the burn from the Tower of Babel, an 11 storey steel tower in the deep playa in 2008.

2007

bow50.jpg (17273 x 1100 - 1763K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 52745 x 3359 (177 Megapix). (20' 3" x 16" [$223] at 216PPI)

2007 featured a huge double rainbow. Expecting rain, I was not ready to shoot a panorama but I did catch the end of the rainbow from the top of the RV. I like the great clarity of the light, and the weather, and everybody being out watching.

2006

Panorama: The man burns, 2006
conf22raw.jpg (5585 x 1100 - 664K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 15709 x 3094 (49 Megapix). (6' 7" x 16" [$93] at 199PPI)

In 2006 I was in a cherry picker for the burn, to capture it all.

Panorama: Burning Man 2006 from Camp Carp
carp50.jpg (17217 x 1100 - 1731K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 52998 x 3386 (179 Megapix). (20' 3" x 16" [$223] at 218PPI)

Another of the giant panoramas with a different perspective, at about 5 o'clock.

Panorama: Fire Conclave dancers before the burn, 2006
conclave.jpg (4393 x 1100 - 452K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 10072 x 2522 (25 Megapix). (4' 8" x 14" [$60] at 180PPI)

Before the burn, the fire conclave spins fire all around the man.

2005

Panorama: Wide view from Center Camp, Burning Man 2005
ccamp10.jpg (4400 x 1100 - 656K) Full size is 11823 x 2956 (35 Megapix). (5' 2" x 16" [$73] at 190PPI) (See Full-Rez Slice)

Wide angle shot from a boomlift high above center camp in 2005

2004

Panorama: Long view from Cherry Picker in front of Center Camp 2004
cherrylong.jpg (16142 x 1100 - 2042K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 43995 x 2998 (132 Megapix). (18' 11" x 16" [$211] at 193PPI)

While 10am was a lousy time to shoot -- poor light, few people out -- this boomlift perspective allowed me to sit exactly in the weighted center of the city to capture its shape in an understandable way.

Panorama: View of the Temple of Stars and extended pathway
temple.jpg (6782 x 1100 - 1302K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 18374 x 2980 (55 Megapix). (8' x 16" [$112] at 192PPI)

This was perhaps the grandest of the temples, and it deserved a large panorama.

2003

Panorama: Long panorama of Burning Man 2003
bml03.jpg (14793 x 1100 - 1803K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 53107 x 3949 (210 Megapix). (17' 4" x 16" [$197] at 254PPI)

This shot, from our own camp at 7, used the latest Canon 1ds, creating one of the most detailed shots I ever made. It centers on the playa, rather than the city.

Panorama: Burning Man 2003 at night
man-night.jpg (19000 x 999 - 1598K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 39217 x 2063 (81 Megapix). (18' 2" x 11" [$161] at 180PPI)

This year featured a man platform stable enough to capture a night shot from the Man, with the cars around it. The man glowed enough to light the area around him.

2002

Panorama: 360 Degree view of Burning Man 2002
fribm02.jpg (16490 x 1100 - 2362K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 44778 x 2987 (134 Megapix). (19' 4" x 16" [$215] at 192PPI)

2002 was my first year with digital, but a great tower in center camp and some great luck with interesting weather produced one that is still my favourite today.

Panorama: Burning Man 2002 at Night - Follow link to pano site for 5 years of Black Rock City Panos
bm02nightlong.jpg (16187 x 1100 - 1166K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 29607 x 2012 (59 Megapix). (13' 8" x 11" [$129] at 180PPI)

That same fine tower afforded the first chance at a good night panorama. Burning Man must be seen at night to be fully appreciated.

cafe02.jpg (5432 x 1100 - 1280K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 15955 x 3231 (51 Megapix). (6' 5" x 16" [$91] at 208PPI)

An effort to capture the bustle of the cafe with many moving people.

Panorama: The group photo for Critical Tits 2002 at Burning Man, from behind

critgroup.jpg
(3225 x 1100 - 570K)

Full size is 8601 x 2934 (25 Megapix)
(For example, 3' 9" x 16" [$54] at 189PPI)
(See Full-Rez Slice)

In 2002, Critical Tits was smaller and the Man made a good panorama platform for it.

2000

Panorama: Burning Man 2000 Panorama from First Camp
firstcamp.jpg (11369 x 1100 - 2022K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 29776 x 2881 (86 Megapix). (13' 4" x 16" [$161] at 185PPI)

There was no tower in 2000, so I shot from the viewing platform of First Camp in sunset.

1999

wide-center_cropped_1.jpg (6739 x 911 - 855K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 6739 x 911 (6 Megapix). (3' 1" x 5" [$25] at 180PPI)

This wide angle show the smaller city of 1999, with the last of the old center camp cafes.

1998

Panorama: Burning Man 1998
burn98.jpg (19000 x 878 - 3320K) or Flash Zoom!Full size is 29963 x 1385 (41 Megapix). (13' 10" x 8" [$98] at 180PPI)

While not up to my current quality technically, this was my first ever giant panorama of my first Burning Man, so it keeps a place in the heart.
