More recently in my Panorama career I have been shooting multi-row panoramas of extremely high resolution, ranging towards a billion pixels (sometimes known as gigapans.) Once you make them this big, web display does not do them justice, and in fact even small prints don't do it. Some of these deserve to be wall sized. For those interested in doing walls, here are some of the larger ones.
In addition these large shots are more amenable to cropping as they still have a lot of resolution.
Note that almost all of my shots from 2009 onwards are at least 5,000 pixels high which prints well at 24" high and decently at 48" high.
For these, you may wish to see the "full rez slice" to get a sense of the level of detail in the photo. Sometimes there is only a partial resolution slice, because I have not yet built the shot at full resolution (which is only needed for printing or zoom viewing.)

Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, Alberta.
Full size is 19828 x 7868 (156 Megapix)
Shot on the same day, this hi-res shot captures the wider view (about 270 degrees) and more sky and moraine as well.

The Crowfoot Glacier overlook. I actually like this better in winter, with more exposed blue ice. That day the ice was mostly white.

Twin Peaks view of San Francisco. While this is a gigapixel shot, the air was not clear enough to justify it, but it's still my largest test.

In the Berner Oberland, the view from the tiny town of Murren.
This is a close up detail on the mountains near Mt. Blanc. I shot a few of these and was distressed to see after the fact that I had goofed them up in really stupid ways. An effect of being up at 3800 metres of altitude!

The following shots are flawed but still interesting and large.
In Akko, an experiment with a multi-row spherical panorama to show the mosque. I like the cognitive dissonance of the traditional building with the LED display that reports prayer times.

This is a super-high resolution shot of the Dome of the Rock, though I did not complete the sky. Try the Full-Rez slice!
