Cruises tend to stop at Chongqing (used to be called Chung King by westerners)
which, after the dam is built, will be the only deepwater port 1000km inland.
This is a giant bustling city. Formerly the lead city of Szechuan, it has
been split off into a giant "metro area" of 36 million people that stretches
for a vast distance down the river. It's not really the biggest city in
the world the way that would make it seem.
It is one of the most polluted cities (we got there on a good day) and was
the capital for the Chinese after the Japanese took the rest of the
downstream capitals. The Flying Tigers were based from here.
