Burning Man 2003

Burning Man 2003

VR Tour

I've written extensively elsewhere about Burning Man. Here are my panoramas from the 2003 Black Rock City

These are just the panoramas. Be sure to check out my regular sized photos of:

2003 2002 2001 2000 1999 1998

Of course don't forget the other panorama years noted above.

I even have a stab at the never ending What is Burning Man? question.

In 2003 I got to borrow the then-amazing 11 megapixel Canon 1Ds (thanks to Sergey and Larry at Google) to take my largest panorama ever. The resulting 220 megapixel image has to be seen printed to be appreciated. The one here is a tiny fraction of it. I will show a version at the Playa next year and at decompression.

Embassy Camp high-res

This is a scale down from the giant shot, really 53,000 pixels by 4,000. Taken from Embassy Camp tower at 7 o'clock/Literal and Esplanade a bit before sunset on Saturday, just before the burn. The ends are close to the sun, which is in the picture, which is why they look darker and hazier.

Things to note in this shot include the Man, art cars, some people taking a group photo in front of the spiderweb, dinnertime in many camps, Thunderdome, center camp and much more. The big box is a repeater for the wireless internet connection, which was provided from our camp.

This was taken with a 70mm lens for the astounding resolution.

G-Spot Camp Tall

A wide angle shot (20mm lens) taken near sunset, Friday, from G-spot camp, on Karmic Circle behind Camparctica (Dogma and Karmic). This tower shows center camp better than the Embassy tower.

man-night.jpg (20911 x 1100 - 1931K) or VR/Zoom!270° x 14° (Set) Full size is 39217 x 2063 (81 Megapix) (18' 2" x 11" at 180PPI)
City at night, from the Man

Always a favourite, this is my first night panorama showing the Esplanade and playa as seen from the Man. This is an artificial view, in that you could not see all this from the Man's pyramid, but I was able to move around and join things. On the far right, you can see back to the Temple of Honor, though a blurry person covers part of it. You can see the laser beam there, ie. all 4 are visible. The purple glow along the bottom is the neon of the Man lighting up the area around him.

Please note, the strange banding around bright lights is an artifact of JPEG compression and is not present in the full resolution image.

Tall city from OCF Camp

A wide (20mm on the 1Ds) shot of the same view and same time as the big long panorama at the top. Shows less detail in print, but shows more of what was below and above me. Amusingly, you can see the shadow of me on the tower, taking the picture. You can also see my giant panorama picture wall installation at the base of the tower, and my friend's ribbed art car. (Also visible in the night panorama.)

Wednesday Tall shot

A shot with the D60 and a 20mm lens from G-spot tower at Karmic and Dogma. This was done Wednesday, so pac-man camp is not ready. The water truck has just come by to reduce the dust.
